Deputy Transport Minister Mr Datuk Abd Aziz Kaprawi said that the government has planned to expand the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) after 2020 due to expected increase in passenger traffic KLIA airport.
PASSENGER TRAFFIC KLIA airport
KLIA is Malaysia’s major international airport in Sepang district of Selangor. It is in 24th position in the world in terms of passenger traffic. In 2020, passenger traffic will increase by more than 30 percent.
He also added that the long term plan includes a new satellite terminal building.
He analyzed the growth of the aviation industry in Malaysia. According to him, KLIA will be able to manage only with the current inflow of passengers till 2020
He gave information regarding the passenger traffic in KLIA airport. In 2016, 89 million passengers were there, while in 2006 it was only 45.2 million. The increase observed is almost 100 percent.
Malaysian National News Agency, BERNAMA contacted Mr Abd Aziz for further details. He told that this is an achievement for KLIA. It has become a transit hub. KLIA is in par with Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Bangkok and Changi Airport, Singapore
ROLE OF MAVCOM
Earlier at the Dewan Negara session, Mr Aziz answered the question from Senator Mr Datuk Mohd Sharif about the number of passengers in KLIA.
On the other hand, he also mentioned about the role of Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom). He told that Mavcom always ensured there was fair competition among different airline companies. They prohibited any means of unfair competition in the aviation market.
However, Mavcom has not put any rule on the flight schedule of companies. This is an individual company’s decision and there is no compromise on benefit of passengers.
On the other hand, passengers were given more space to plan. All this was reported to the Senator Mr Abdullah Mat Yasim. He wanted to know about the governments action related to airlines having same flight schedules.
